Although Sita had already demonstrated her purity, rumours and doubts continued among certain people.
Rama was deeply troubled.
As king, he believed that he had to protect the trust that the people placed in their ruler.
This created an extremely painful conflict between his responsibilities as a husband and his responsibilities as king.
Rama’s Painful Decision
Rama was devastated by the situation.
He loved Sita deeply, but he believed that a king had to place the welfare and confidence of the kingdom above his personal happiness.
Eventually, Rama made the heartbreaking decision that Sita should leave Ayodhya.
This became one of the most tragic episodes in the later part of the Ramayana.
Sita Goes to the Forest
Sita was taken toward the forest.
She did not know at first that she would not return to Ayodhya.
The journey eventually brought her to the hermitage of Sage Valmiki.
Valmiki welcomed Sita and gave her protection.
The forest once again became an important part of Sita’s life.
Sita Finds Shelter in Valmiki’s Ashram
At Valmiki’s ashram, Sita lived a simple and peaceful life.

Their voices would eventually carry the story back toward Ayodhya.
Meanwhile, Rama Continued His Rule
Back in Ayodhya, Rama continued to rule the kingdom.
The ideal of Rama Rajya remained associated with justice, order and prosperity.
But despite the success of his kingdom, Rama continued to carry personal sorrow.
His separation from Sita was a deep emotional burden.
The Ashwamedha Sacrifice
In the traditional account, Rama later performed the Ashwamedha sacrifice, an important royal ritual.
During this period, Lava and Kusha would become connected with Rama’s court in an unexpected way.
Their knowledge of the Ramayana would eventually lead to a remarkable meeting.
