    MAHA BHARATHAM – PART 4

The Birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura

After the death of Vichitravirya, the Kuru dynasty faced a serious problem. There was no direct heir to continue the royal family.

Queen Satyavati was deeply worried about the future of Hastinapura. She knew that the Kuru dynasty needed heirs, and this led to an important decision that would change the history of the Mahabharata.

The story now introduces Vyasa, Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura—four people whose lives would become central to the future of the Kuru kingdom.

    1. The Kuru Dynasty Faces a Crisis

    Vichitravirya had died without children.

His two wives, Ambika and Ambalika, were still young, but there was no heir to inherit the throne of Hastinapura.

Bhishma was already the most powerful member of the family.

However, he could not become the father of children because of the terrible vow he had taken for his father Shantanu.

Satyavati therefore found herself in a difficult situation.

She wanted the Kuru family line to continue.

The future of Hastinapura depended on finding a solution to this problem.

    2. Satyavati Reveals an Important Secret

Satyavati then revealed something from her own past.

Before her marriage to King Shantanu, she had a son with the great sage Parashara.

That son was Krishna Dvaipayana, who became widely known as Vyasa.

Vyasa was a great sage and one of the most important figures connected with the Mahabharata tradition.

Satyavati called upon Vyasa and asked him to help preserve the Kuru dynasty.

Vyasa agreed to help his mother.

His involvement would lead to the birth of the next generation of the royal family.

    3. The Birth of Dhritarashtra

Vyasa first met Ambika, the wife of Vichitravirya.

According to the traditional story, Ambika became frightened when she saw the powerful sage and closed her eyes.

As a result, her son was born blind.

    This child was named Dhritarashtra.

Although he was physically blind, Dhritarashtra was born into the Kuru royal family.

His blindness would later become an important factor in the question of who should rule Hastinapura.

Dhritarashtra would eventually become the father of the Kauravas.

    4. The Birth of Pandu

    Vyasa then met Ambalika.

When she saw the powerful sage, she became frightened and her face became pale.

Her son was therefore born with a pale complexion.

    He was named Pandu.

Pandu grew up to become a skilled warrior and a capable member of the Kuru family.

Because Dhritarashtra was blind, Pandu would eventually be placed on the throne of Hastinapura.

His reign would become very important to the future of the dynasty.

Pandu would later become the father of the Pandavas.

    5. The Birth of Vidura

Satyavati wanted another attempt to ensure the future of the Kuru family.

But Ambika was unwilling to meet Vyasa again.

Instead, a maidservant went to him.

Unlike Ambika, she was calm, respectful and fearless.

She welcomed Vyasa with great respect.

A wise and intelligent son was born to her.

    He was named Vidura.

Vidura did not become king, but he became one of the wisest and most respected people in Hastinapura.

He was known for his honesty, intelligence and understanding of dharma.

Throughout the Mahabharata, Vidura often tried to guide the royal family toward the right path.

    6. Three Brothers, Three Different Destinies

Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura grew up in the Kuru kingdom.

Although they were connected to the same royal family, their destinies were very different.

    Dhritarashtra was powerful but blind.

Pandu became a great warrior and eventually ruled Hastinapura.

Vidura was known for his wisdom and knowledge of dharma.

The three brothers would become the fathers or guardians of the next generation that would eventually divide the Kuru family.

Dhritarashtra would have the Kauravas, while Pandu would become the father of the Pandavas.

The rivalry between these two branches of the family would eventually become one of the greatest conflicts in Indian epic literature.

    2. Chitrangada Becomes King

After the death of King Shantanu, his elder son Chitrangada became the king of Hastinapura.

Chitrangada was a brave and powerful warrior.

He was confident in his abilities and was determined to protect the kingdom.

However, his reign did not last for very long.

According to the Mahabharata tradition, Chitrangada had a conflict with a powerful Gandharva who also carried the name Chitrangada.

The conflict became a fierce battle.

The Gandharva eventually defeated and killed the Kuru king.

The death of Chitrangada was a major shock to Hastinapura.

Since Chitrangada had no heir to continue his line, the responsibility of the kingdom passed to his younger brother.

    3. Vichitravirya Becomes King

After Chitrangada’s death, Vichitravirya became the ruler of Hastinapura.

He was still young, so Bhishma played an important role in protecting and guiding him.

Bhishma wanted to ensure that Vichitravirya would have a suitable queen and that the Kuru dynasty would continue.

At this time, the king of Kashi announced a swayamvara for his three daughters:

    Amba, Ambika and Ambalika.

Princes from different kingdoms were expected to attend the ceremony.

Bhishma decided that the three princesses should become the wives of Vichitravirya.

    4. Bhishma Goes to the Swayamvara

Bhishma travelled to the kingdom of Kashi.

He arrived at the swayamvara and challenged the assembled kings.

Bhishma defeated the princes who opposed him and carried away the three princesses:

    Amba, Ambika and Ambalika.

He intended them to marry Vichitravirya.

The three princesses were brought to Hastinapura.

But Bhishma did not know that the eldest princess, Amba, had already given her heart to another king.

This would soon create a serious problem.

    5. Amba Reveals Her Love

After reaching Hastinapura, Amba told Bhishma about her situation.

She explained that she was already in love with King Salva and that they had intended to marry.

Bhishma understood that Amba should not be forced into a marriage she did not want.

He therefore allowed her to leave Hastinapura and go to Salva.

Amba went to Salva hoping that he would accept her.

But Salva refused to marry her.

He felt that Bhishma had already defeated him and taken Amba away from the swayamvara.

    Amba was left devastated.

She had lost the future she had imagined for herself.

    6. Amba Returns to Bhishma

With nowhere else to go, Amba returned to Bhishma.

She believed that Bhishma was responsible for the situation because he had taken her away from the swayamvara.

Amba asked Bhishma to marry her.

But Bhishma reminded her of the terrible vow he had taken years earlier.

He had promised that he would never marry.

Therefore, he could not marry Amba.

Amba became filled with anger and sorrow.

She believed that her life had been destroyed because of Bhishma’s actions.

From that moment, she developed a deep determination to bring about Bhishma’s downfall.

    7. Amba’s Determination

    Amba did not give up.

She sought help from powerful warriors and elders, hoping someone would force Bhishma to accept responsibility.

Her story eventually became connected with Parashurama, the legendary warrior and teacher.

    Parashurama agreed to confront Bhishma.

A great battle between Bhishma and Parashurama followed.

The battle was extraordinary and lasted for a long time.

    Neither warrior was easily defeated.

Eventually, the conflict ended without Bhishma being forced to break his vow.

Amba’s determination, however, did not disappear.

She continued to seek a way to defeat Bhishma.

Her story would eventually become deeply connected with the events of the Kurukshetra war.

    8. The Marriage of Vichitravirya

Meanwhile, the other two princesses, Ambika and Ambalika, married Vichitravirya.

Vichitravirya became the husband of both princesses.

For a while, it appeared that the Kuru dynasty would continue normally.

But tragedy once again struck the royal family.

    Vichitravirya became seriously ill.

Despite the efforts made to save him, he eventually died without having children.

This created a major crisis for the Kuru dynasty.

There was now no direct male heir from Shantanu’s line through Vichitravirya.

Satyavati was deeply worried about the future of Hastinapura.

    9. A Dynasty Without an Heir

The death of Vichitravirya created a serious succession problem.

Bhishma was the most powerful and respected member of the Kuru family.

But because of his great vow, he could not marry or have children.

Therefore, the future of the dynasty was uncertain.

Satyavati had to find a way to continue the Kuru lineage.

This difficult situation would lead to one of the most important developments in the entire Mahabharata.

The next generation of the Kuru family would eventually include the people whose rivalry would lead to the great conflict between the Pandavas and Kauravas.
