    MAHA BHARATHAM – PART 11

The Dice Game and the Great Turning Point

The Pandavas had reached the height of their success at Indraprastha.

But Duryodhana’s jealousy had become stronger than ever.

With the help of Shakuni, he planned to invite Yudhishthira to Hastinapura for a game of dice.

What appeared to be an ordinary royal game was actually a carefully planned trap.

The events that followed would change the lives of the Pandavas, Draupadi and the entire Kuru dynasty.

    1. The Invitation to Hastinapura

Yudhishthira received an invitation from Dhritarashtra.

He was asked to come to Hastinapura and participate in a game of dice.

Yudhishthira understood that the situation could be dangerous.

However, the customs and expectations surrounding royal invitations made it difficult for him to simply refuse.

The Pandavas therefore travelled to Hastinapura along with Draupadi.

They entered the royal court without knowing how devastating the coming game would become.

    2. Shakuni Plays the Dice

The game was arranged in the royal court.

Duryodhana wanted Shakuni to play on his behalf.

Shakuni was highly skilled at the game of dice.

    Yudhishthira began playing.

At first, the stakes were relatively small.

But as the game continued, the stakes became greater and greater.

    Yudhishthira continued losing.

Shakuni’s skill with the dice gave Duryodhana a huge advantage.

    3. Yudhishthira Loses His Wealth

Yudhishthira began placing greater possessions at stake.

    He lost his treasures.

    He lost his wealth.

He lost valuable possessions belonging to the Pandavas.

The court watched as the game became increasingly dangerous.

Vidura repeatedly warned Dhritarashtra that the situation was wrong.

    But the game continued.

Yudhishthira’s judgement became increasingly clouded by the gambling.

    4. Yudhishthira Stakes His Kingdom

The game became even more serious.

Yudhishthira eventually placed Indraprastha at stake.

    He lost.

The kingdom that the Pandavas had built with years of hard work was now taken from them through the dice game.

    Duryodhana was delighted.

But the game was not over.

Shakuni continued encouraging Yudhishthira to place more at stake.

    5. Yudhishthira Stakes His Brothers

Yudhishthira then made an even more shocking decision.

He began staking his own brothers.

One after another, he lost them in the game.

    Bhima.

    Arjuna.

    Nakula.

    Sahadeva.

The Pandavas were now considered lost in the game.

The atmosphere in the court became tense.

    Yet the game continued.

    6. Yudhishthira Stakes Himself

After losing his brothers, Yudhishthira placed himself at stake.

    He lost again.

Now Yudhishthira himself was considered defeated.

The Pandavas had lost their kingdom, wealth and freedom.

But Duryodhana and Shakuni continued to push the game further.

Then Yudhishthira made the most controversial decision of the entire game.

    He placed Draupadi at stake.

    7. Draupadi Is Summoned to the Court

Draupadi was in her chambers when she learned that she had been lost in the dice game.

    She was shocked.

She questioned how Yudhishthira could stake her after he had already lost himself.

    She asked an important question:

If Yudhishthira had already lost his own freedom, did he still have the right to stake her?

This question created a moral crisis in the court.

    The elders remained silent.

    8. Draupadi Enters the Royal Court

Draupadi was brought before the assembly.

She stood before the elders and questioned the legality and morality of what had happened.

She asked Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and the other respected members of the court whether Yudhishthira had the right to stake her after losing himself.

    The question was difficult.

Bhishma acknowledged the complexity of the situation.

    Draupadi continued demanding an answer.

Her courage in that moment became one of the most memorable parts of the Mahabharata.

    9. The Court Falls Silent

The elders of the Kuru court were deeply troubled.

Vidura opposed the treatment of Draupadi.

Vikarna, one of the Kauravas, also questioned whether the action against Draupadi was justified.

    But Duryodhana refused to listen.

The situation became increasingly humiliating and dangerous for Draupadi.

The royal court had reached a point where the actions of a few people threatened the honour of the entire Kuru dynasty.

    10. Krishna Protects Draupadi

    Dushasana attempted to humiliate Draupadi.

Draupadi prayed to Krishna for protection.

According to the traditional account, Krishna protected her dignity through a divine intervention.

The cloth she was wearing became endless, and Dushasana was unable to remove it.

    He became exhausted.

    The court was left astonished.

    Draupadi’s honour was protected.

    Bhima was furious.

He could not accept the humiliation suffered by Draupadi.

He made a powerful vow against Dushasana and Duryodhana.

Then she asked for the freedom of the other Pandavas.

    Dhritarashtra granted her requests.

    13. The Second Dice Game

Despite everything that had happened, another game of dice was proposed.

The Pandavas were invited once again.

This time, the condition was different.

The losing side would have to spend twelve years in the forest followed by one year living in disguise.

If they were discovered during the thirteenth year, the period of exile would begin again.

    Yudhishthira accepted the challenge.

    Shakuni played the dice.

    Yudhishthira lost.

The Pandavas were once again defeated.

The Pandavas had lost their kingdom again.

They were now required to leave for the forest.

    Draupadi chose to accompany them.

    Kunti remained in Hastinapura.

The Pandavas removed their royal possessions and prepared for exile.

The people of Hastinapura were deeply saddened to see them leave.

The once-powerful rulers of Indraprastha were now forced to live in the forest.

The Beginning of the Great Exile

The dice game had completely changed the story.

    The Pandavas had lost:

    Their wealth.
    Their kingdom.
    Their royal position.
    Their freedom.

Now they had to spend twelve years in the forest and one year in disguise.

But their exile would not be a period of weakness.

During those years, the Pandavas would meet sages, acquire divine weapons, face powerful enemies and prepare for the great conflict that was coming.

The next chapter begins their long journey through the forest.

The story continues in Maha Bharatham Part 12.

Draupadi questioned whether Yudhishthira could legally stake her after he had already lost his own freedom.

What happened after the dice game?

The Pandavas were sent into twelve years of forest exile followed by one year in disguise.

    Who protected Draupadi?

According to the traditional account, Krishna protected Draupadi through divine intervention.

    MAHA BHARATHAM – PART 10

The Rajasuya Yajna and Duryodhana’s Humiliation

Indraprastha had become a magnificent kingdom under the leadership of Yudhishthira.

The Pandavas were now respected by many kings, and their influence had grown greatly.

Yudhishthira decided to perform the Rajasuya Yajna, a grand royal ceremony through which a powerful king could establish his authority over other rulers.

But this great ceremony would also bring together Krishna, the Pandavas, many kings and the Kuru family.

And during this gathering, Duryodhana would experience something that would deepen his hatred toward the Pandavas.

    1. Yudhishthira Prepares for the Rajasuya

Yudhishthira wanted the Rajasuya Yajna to be performed in a grand and proper manner.

For this to happen, the Pandavas needed the recognition of powerful kings.

The four younger Pandavas travelled in different directions.

They established the authority of Yudhishthira and returned with wealth and gifts from many kingdoms.

The preparations for the ceremony at Indraprastha became enormous.

Kings, princes, sages and important guests began arriving.

    2. Krishna, Bhima and Arjuna Face Jarasandha

There was still one major obstacle.

Jarasandha, the powerful king of Magadha, controlled many kingdoms and had imprisoned numerous kings.

Krishna knew that Jarasandha needed to be defeated before Yudhishthira could complete the Rajasuya.

Krishna travelled with Bhima and Arjuna to challenge him.

Bhima fought Jarasandha in a long wrestling battle.

After a tremendous struggle, Bhima defeated him.

    The imprisoned kings were released.

This victory greatly strengthened Yudhishthira’s position.

    Shishupala became furious.

He began insulting Krishna in front of the entire assembly.

He questioned why Krishna deserved the highest honour.

    Bhishma and others defended Krishna.

    But Shishupala continued his insults.

Krishna remained calm for a long time.

He had promised Shishupala’s mother that he would forgive a certain number of Shishupala’s offences.

When Shishupala crossed that limit, Krishna finally acted.

The Dice Game Is About to Begin

Yudhishthira received the invitation from Hastinapura.

He knew that gambling could be dangerous.

Yet, according to the traditions and expectations of the time, refusing an invitation from a member of the royal family was difficult.

The Pandavas therefore travelled to Hastinapura.

They did not know that Shakuni had prepared a plan to defeat Yudhishthira through the dice game.

What begins as a royal game will soon become a disaster for the entire Kuru family.

The story continues in Maha Bharatham Part 11.

Duryodhana’s Jealousy, The Poisoning of Bhima and the House of Lac

The rivalry between the Pandavas and Kauravas had now become much more serious.

The princes had grown into powerful young warriors. The Pandavas were respected by the people of Hastinapura, while Duryodhana increasingly feared that the Pandavas would eventually become more powerful than him.

Among all the Pandavas, Bhima was especially disliked by Duryodhana because of his extraordinary strength.

Duryodhana’s jealousy slowly turned into hatred, and he began making dangerous plans against his cousins.

    1. Duryodhana’s Growing Jealousy

As the Pandavas and Kauravas grew older, people began noticing the qualities of the Pandavas.

Yudhishthira was respected for his honesty and sense of dharma.

Bhima was known for his tremendous physical strength.

Arjuna had become an extraordinary archer.

Nakula and Sahadeva were also talented and disciplined princes.

Duryodhana began to worry about the future.

He feared that Yudhishthira might eventually become king of Hastinapura.

Instead of accepting the Pandavas as his brothers and allies, Duryodhana allowed jealousy to grow inside him.

    2. Bhima Becomes Duryodhana’s Main Target

    Bhima was particularly strong.

During their childhood, the princes often played and trained together.

Bhima’s strength frequently gave the Pandavas an advantage.

    Duryodhana could not tolerate this.

He began looking for a way to remove Bhima from his path.

His hatred eventually led him to make a dangerous plan.

    Duryodhana decided to poison Bhima.

    3. Duryodhana Poisons Bhima

One day, Duryodhana invited the Pandavas to spend time near the river.

Food was prepared for the princes.

Duryodhana secretly mixed poison into Bhima’s food.

Bhima ate the food without suspecting anything.

    Soon, the poison affected him.

Duryodhana then had Bhima carried to the river and thrown into the water.

He believed that Bhima would die.

    But Bhima’s destiny was different.

    4. Bhima Reaches the Realm of the Nagas

Instead of dying, Bhima was carried by the river to the realm of the Nagas.

    There, the Nagas discovered him.

According to the traditional story, the poison already inside Bhima’s body was neutralized by their actions.

Bhima was then given powerful nourishment.

This made his already extraordinary strength even greater.

After recovering, Bhima eventually returned to Hastinapura.

    His survival shocked Duryodhana.

The attempt to destroy Bhima had failed.

    5. The Pandavas Continue Their Lives

Bhima returned to his brothers and mother.

The Pandavas did not immediately understand everything that had happened.

But the rivalry between the two groups continued to grow.

The elders of Hastinapura were concerned about the increasing tension.

Bhishma, Vidura and other members of the royal family wanted peace within the Kuru dynasty.

    But Duryodhana’s jealousy continued.

He was supported by his uncle Shakuni, who was clever, ambitious and strongly opposed to the Pandavas.

    6. Yudhishthira Becomes the Heir

As the princes grew older, the question of who would eventually rule Hastinapura became increasingly important.

Yudhishthira was the eldest of the Pandavas.

He was respected for his character, wisdom and commitment to dharma.

Many people believed that he was suitable to become the future ruler.

This made Duryodhana even more worried.

He feared losing his opportunity to become king.

Duryodhana and his supporters therefore began thinking about a much more dangerous plan.

    7. The Plan to Send the Pandavas Away

Duryodhana’s supporters came up with a plan to send the Pandavas away from Hastinapura.

The Pandavas were invited to travel to a place called Varanavata.

A special palace had been prepared there for them.

The palace appeared beautiful and luxurious.

But there was a hidden danger.

It was constructed using highly flammable materials, including lac.

The plan was to set the palace on fire while the Pandavas were inside.

This became known as the story of the House of Lac.

    8. Vidura Warns the Pandavas

Vidura was one of the wisest people in Hastinapura.

He understood that the invitation to Varanavata was dangerous.

But he could not openly accuse Duryodhana and his supporters.

Instead, Vidura gave Yudhishthira a warning using words that carried a hidden meaning.

Yudhishthira understood what Vidura was trying to tell him.

He realized that the beautiful palace could actually be a trap.

    The Pandavas therefore remained alert.

    9. The Pandavas Reach Varanavata

The Pandavas travelled to Varanavata along with Kunti.

They entered the magnificent palace and appeared to be unaware of the danger.

But they had understood Vidura’s warning.

They secretly prepared a way to escape.

A tunnel was constructed beneath the palace so that they could leave safely if the building was set on fire.

The Pandavas waited for the right opportunity.

    10. The House of Lac Is Set on Fire

Eventually, the palace was set on fire.

The flames spread rapidly because the building was made from highly flammable materials.

The people who had planned the attack believed that the Pandavas and Kunti were trapped inside.

But the Pandavas had already prepared their escape.

They used the secret tunnel and managed to leave the burning palace.

The world believed that the Pandavas had died.

    But they were alive.

Their survival would soon lead them into a completely new phase of their lives.

    The Pandavas Disappear

After escaping the House of Lac, the Pandavas and Kunti decided to remain hidden.

They travelled through forests and unfamiliar places.

They could no longer safely return to Hastinapura because their enemies believed them to be dead.

During this period, they would face many new challenges.

They would meet new people, encounter dangerous enemies and eventually arrive at a kingdom where a great swayamvara was being prepared.

That event would change the lives of the five brothers forever.

The story continues in Maha Bharatham Part 8.
