The Pandavas in Disguise – Life in King Virata’s Kingdom
The twelve years of forest exile had finally come to an end.
But the Pandavas still had one difficult condition to complete.
They had to spend one full year living in disguise.
If anyone discovered their true identities during this year, they would have to begin the exile again.
The Pandavas therefore entered the kingdom of King Virata and took completely different identities.
1. The Pandavas Decide Their Disguises
The Pandavas discussed how they could remain hidden.

Yudhishthira decided to serve King Virata as a court adviser under the name Kanka.
Bhima chose to work as a cook under the name Vallabha.
Arjuna adopted the identity of Brihannala, a teacher of music and dance.
Nakula became a keeper of horses.
Sahadeva took responsibility for the cattle.
Draupadi entered the palace as a maid named Sairandhri.

2. Yudhishthira Becomes Kanka
Yudhishthira entered King Virata’s court as Kanka.
He presented himself as a knowledgeable Brahmin who understood the game of dice and royal affairs.
King Virata accepted him into the court.
Yudhishthira remained calm and careful.
He had to hide the fact that he was actually the eldest Pandava and former king of Indraprastha.
3. Bhima Becomes Vallabha
Bhima took the role of a royal cook.
He called himself Vallabha.
It was unusual for someone as powerful as Bhima to work in a kitchen.
But Bhima was more than capable.
He was also a skilled wrestler and could easily protect himself if necessary.
He carefully controlled his enormous strength so that nobody would recognize him.
4. Arjuna Becomes Brihannala

He took the identity of Brihannala, a teacher of music and dance.
He served in the palace and taught Princess Uttara.
Arjuna had learned these arts during his stay in the heavenly realm.

5. Nakula and Sahadeva
Nakula and Sahadeva also entered Virata’s service.
Nakula became responsible for the king’s horses.
His knowledge of horses made him extremely valuable.
Sahadeva took care of the kingdom’s cattle.
Both brothers performed their duties quietly.
Nobody in the palace knew that these servants were actually princes of the Kuru dynasty.
6. Draupadi Becomes Sairandhri
Draupadi entered the palace as Sairandhri.
She presented herself as a woman skilled in arranging hair and assisting the queen.
She served Queen Sudeshna.
Draupadi was extremely careful to keep her identity secret.
But her beauty attracted the attention of Kichaka, the powerful commander of King Virata’s army.
This would create a serious danger for Draupadi.
7. Kichaka Notices Draupadi
Kichaka was one of the most powerful men in Virata’s kingdom.
He was also arrogant and feared by many people.
When he saw Sairandhri, he became attracted to her.
Draupadi rejected his advances.
She reminded him that she was married and that approaching her was inappropriate.
But Kichaka refused to listen.
Draupadi became increasingly worried that her secret identity might be exposed.
8. Draupadi Seeks Bhima’s Help
Draupadi secretly went to Bhima.
She told him about Kichaka’s behavior.
Bhima became furious.
But they could not simply attack Kichaka openly.
If Bhima displayed his enormous strength, the Pandavas’ identities could be discovered.

Draupadi would lure Kichaka to a private place.

Kichaka came to the place believing that he would meet Draupadi.
Instead, he found Bhima.
A fierce fight followed.
Kichaka was a powerful warrior, but Bhima’s strength was far greater.
Bhima defeated Kichaka.
The people of the palace were shocked by Kichaka’s death.
But nobody knew who had actually killed him.
Draupadi’s honour had been protected, while the Pandavas’ identities remained hidden.
10. The Kauravas Become Suspicious
News of Kichaka’s death eventually reached the Kauravas.
Duryodhana and his advisers began wondering who could have killed such a powerful warrior.
They suspected that the Pandavas might be hiding somewhere.
Duryodhana began searching for them.
At the same time, the Kauravas planned an attack on King Virata’s cattle.
Their intention was to weaken Virata’s kingdom.
They did not realize that the Pandavas were secretly living there.
11. The Cattle Raid
The Kaurava army attacked the cattle belonging to King Virata.
Virata’s forces prepared to defend the kingdom.
But the situation became difficult.
The king’s son, Prince Uttara, wanted to lead the defence.
However, he had little experience as a warrior.
Brihannala, who was actually Arjuna, accompanied him as his charioteer.
Uttara soon became frightened when he saw the enormous Kaurava army.
12. Arjuna Reveals His Identity
Uttara wanted to escape from the battlefield.
Arjuna then revealed the truth.
He told Uttara that he was actually Arjuna, one of the Pandavas.
Arjuna took back his famous bow Gandiva.
The time had come to stop hiding.
The thirteenth year of exile was almost complete.
Arjuna prepared to face the Kaurava army.
13. Arjuna Faces the Kaurava Army
Arjuna stood against many great warriors.
Among them were:
- Bhishma
- Drona
- Karna
- Kripacharya
- Ashwatthama
- Duryodhana
Arjuna fought with extraordinary skill.
The Kaurava warriors recognized the power of the Gandiva.
The Pandavas’ hidden year was now almost complete.
Arjuna successfully defended Virata’s cattle and forced the Kaurava army to retreat.
The Pandavas’ Disguise Comes to an End
The Pandavas had successfully completed their year in disguise.
Their identities were now revealed.
King Virata learned that the people who had been serving in his palace were actually the famous Pandavas.
He was amazed.
The Pandavas had fulfilled the conditions of their exile.
Now they were free to demand the return of their kingdom.
But the Kauravas were not prepared to give it back.
A final attempt would be made to restore peace.
And soon, Krishna himself would travel to Hastinapura as a peace messenger.
