Ramayana Part 34: Sacred Places of the Ramayana | The Journey of Rama Across India

In the next article, we’ll explore the important places associated with the Ramayana tradition, from Ayodhya and Mithila to Chitrakoot, Panchavati, Kishkindha and Rameswaram, and how these locations keep the memory of Rama’s journey alive even today.

The Ramayana Is Also a Journey Through Places

The Ramayana is not only a story of people and events.

It is also a journey across landscapes.

Rama’s story takes us through:

1. Ayodhya – The City of Rama

The journey begins with Ayodhya, traditionally regarded as Rama’s birthplace and the capital of the kingdom of Kosala.

Ayodhya is associated with some of the most important events in Rama’s life:

2. Mithila – The Land of Sita

The city of Janakpur, in present-day Nepal, is particularly associated with Sita and the story of her marriage to Rama.

The Janaki Mandir is one of the most famous landmarks connected with this tradition.

3. Chitrakoot – The Forest Years

Chitrakoot is traditionally associated with the period when Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived during their exile.

The region is known for its forests, hills and rivers.

According to tradition, Rama spent an important period here.

Chitrakoot therefore became a major pilgrimage destination associated with the exile portion of the Ramayana.

4. Panchavati – The Forest of Important Events

Panchavati, traditionally identified with the area around present-day Nashik in Maharashtra, is another important location in the Ramayana tradition.

Kishkindha is traditionally identified with the region around present-day Hampi and Anegundi in Karnataka.

The landscape contains rocky hills, caves and rivers that have become strongly associated with the Ramayana tradition.

7. Rishyamukha Mountain

Hanuman found the person to whom he would dedicate himself.

8. Rameswaram – The Southern Journey

The story eventually moves toward the southern coast.

Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu, is traditionally connected with Rama’s journey toward Lanka.

The area is especially associated with the worship of Shiva and the tradition surrounding the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

Rameswaram is therefore important both within the broader Ramayana tradition and within Hindu pilgrimage.

9. Rama Setu – The Bridge Toward Lanka

One of the most famous geographical features associated with the Ramayana is Rama Setu, traditionally described as the bridge built by Rama’s forces toward Lanka.

The Ramayana describes the Vanara army constructing a crossing over the sea.

The story of the bridge has remained one of the epic’s most memorable images.

10. Lanka

The final major geographical setting of the central Ramayana story is Lanka, the kingdom ruled by Ravana.

The epic describes Rama’s army crossing the sea and fighting a great battle there.

The identification of the Lanka of the Ramayana with the modern island nation of Sri Lanka is a subject surrounded by different traditions and interpretations.

It is therefore useful to distinguish the epic’s Lanka from claims about exact historical or archaeological identification.

A Journey Across India

When we look at these places together, the Ramayana becomes a remarkable geographical journey:

Ayodhya → Mithila → Chitrakoot → Dandakaranya → Panchavati → Kishkindha → Rameswaram → Lanka

Each place is associated with a different stage of the story.

Now we come to one of the most important figures in the entire Ramayana:

Sita’s story is filled with love, courage, sacrifice, patience and strength.

She is not simply remembered as Rama’s wife. Her journey is one of the most powerful parts of the Ramayana.

🌱 The Mysterious Birth of Sita

The traditional story of Sita’s birth is extraordinary.

Sita is associated with Mithila, ruled by King Janaka.

According to the famous traditional account, Janaka discovers a baby girl while preparing the land for a sacred ritual.

He accepts her as his daughter.

She is named Sita, a name associated with a furrow in the earth.

Because of this story, Sita is also traditionally connected with Bhumi Devi — Mother Earth.

👑 Sita Grows Up in Mithila

Sita grows up in the royal household of Mithila.

King Janaka raises her with great affection.

She becomes known for her beauty, intelligence, dignity and strong character.

Her childhood in Mithila prepares the way for one of the most important events in the Ramayana:

When Sita reaches marriageable age, King Janaka announces a great challenge.

A powerful bow associated with Lord Shiva is brought before the assembled princes.

The challenge involves lifting and handling the mighty bow.

Many princes attempt it.

But they cannot accomplish the task.

Then Rama steps forward.

Rama successfully lifts the bow.

The traditional story says that the bow breaks.

Rama wins the challenge.

Sita and Rama are married.

Their marriage becomes one of the central relationships of the Ramayana.

🏠 Life in Ayodhya

After their marriage, Sita goes to Ayodhya with Rama.

She becomes part of the royal family.

For some time, their life appears peaceful.

But everything changes when Rama is ordered to spend fourteen years in the forest.

Rama tells Sita that she should remain safely in Ayodhya.

But Sita refuses to stay behind.

She decides to accompany her husband.

Her decision demonstrates one of the most important characteristics traditionally associated with her:

Determination.

She chooses to share Rama’s difficult life rather than remain in the comfort of the palace.

Lakshmana also accompanies them.

The three leave Ayodhya together.

🌲 Sita’s Life in the Forest

Life in the forest is completely different from royal life.

There are no palaces or royal comforts.

Sita lives among trees, rivers and hermitages.

She shares Rama’s experiences and faces the difficulties of forest life.

But the peaceful period does not last forever.

🦌 The Golden Deer

One day, Sita sees a beautiful golden deer.

She asks Rama to capture it.

The deer is associated with Maricha, who is working with Ravana.

Rama follows it into the forest.

Later, a deceptive cry makes Sita believe Rama is in danger.

Lakshmana eventually leaves to look for Rama.

Sita is left alone.

👑 Ravana Arrives

Ravana arrives disguised as a wandering ascetic.

He speaks to Sita.

Eventually, he reveals his true identity and abducts her.

Sita is taken away from the forest.

This becomes the central crisis of the Ramayana.

During the abduction, the great bird Jatayu sees what is happening.

He tries to stop Ravana.

Jatayu fights bravely.

But Ravana defeats him.

Later, Rama discovers the wounded Jatayu.

Before dying, Jatayu tells Rama what happened to Sita.

His sacrifice helps Rama understand where she has been taken.

🌴 Sita in Lanka

Ravana takes Sita to Lanka.

But Sita refuses to accept him.

She remains committed to Rama.

Ravana tries to persuade and pressure her, but she does not change her decision.

She is kept in the Ashoka grove.

There she waits for Rama.

🐒 Hanuman Finds Sita

Rama sends Hanuman to search for Sita.

After crossing the ocean, Hanuman enters Lanka.

He eventually finds Sita in the Ashoka grove.

Hanuman approaches her carefully.

He tells her that he has come as Rama’s messenger.

To prove his identity, he gives her Rama’s ring.

💍 Sita Gives Hanuman a Message

Sita is relieved to learn that Rama knows where she is.

She gives Hanuman a jewel to take back to Rama.

This becomes proof that Hanuman has successfully found her.

Hanuman returns to Rama with the news:

Sita has been found.

🌊 Rama’s Journey to Lanka

After learning where Sita is, Rama prepares for the journey to Lanka.

The Vanara army helps him.

A bridge is constructed across the ocean in the traditional narrative.

Rama’s forces reach Lanka.

The great war begins.

⚔️ Sita Waits for Rama

While the battle is taking place, Sita remains in Lanka.

She does not know exactly what is happening on the battlefield.

But she continues to hope that Rama will rescue her.

Eventually, Ravana is defeated.

🔥 The Agni Pariksha Tradition

The Ramayana tradition contains a difficult and widely discussed episode involving Agni, the fire deity.

In the traditional narrative, Sita undergoes a fire ordeal to demonstrate her purity.

This episode has been interpreted in different ways by different commentators and traditions.

For a blog article, it is important to present the episode respectfully and recognise that interpretations vary.

🏠 Sita Returns to Ayodhya

Rama, Sita and their companions return to Ayodhya.

Rama is crowned king.

The return is celebrated with great joy.

Rama begins his reign.

The kingdom prospers according to the traditional ideal of Rama Rajya.

However, rumours and questions about Sita’s time in Lanka eventually create a serious problem.

🌳 Sita Goes to Valmiki’s Ashram

In the later traditional narrative, Sita leaves Ayodhya and goes to the hermitage of Sage Valmiki.

There she gives birth to twin sons:

They grow up under Valmiki’s guidance.

Sita raises them away from the royal palace.

Valmiki teaches Lava and Kusha the story of Rama.

But their arrival in Mithila was not an ordinary journey.

Here, Rama was about to meet Sita, the princess of Mithila.

Mithila was ruled by King Janaka, who is remembered in the Ramayana as a wise and respected ruler.

When Vishwamitra arrived in Mithila with Rama and Lakshmana, Janaka welcomed the sage with great respect.

The king was already preparing for a major event.

He had announced a swayamvara for his daughter Sita.

🏹 The Extraordinary Bow

The man who could lift and string the mighty bow would become Sita’s husband.

But the challenge proved far beyond their abilities.

The swayamvara attracted rulers and warriors from different kingdoms.

Each one wanted to demonstrate his strength.

But one after another, they failed to accomplish the challenge.

The bow remained untouched.

King Janaka began to worry.

He wondered whether anyone would ever be capable of completing the challenge.

Then Rama arrived.

👀 Rama Sees Sita

As Rama entered the royal setting of Mithila, he saw Sita.

🕉️ The Ramayana – Part 3: Rama, Lakshmana and Sage Vishwamitra | The Journey Begins
In Part 2, we learned about King Dasharatha, his three queens, the birth of Rama and his three brothers, and the princes’ early education.

Now the story takes an important turn.

Rama has grown into a disciplined young prince of Ayodhya.

But his peaceful life in the palace is about to change.

A powerful sage arrives at the royal court with an unusual request.

His name is:

Sage Vishwamitra

And his request will take Rama and Lakshmana away from Ayodhya for the first great journey of their lives.

🧘 Who Was Sage Vishwamitra?

Vishwamitra is one of the most important sages in the Ramayana tradition.

He is remembered not only as a powerful sage but also for his extraordinary spiritual journey.

In traditional accounts, Vishwamitra was originally a king named Kaushika.

His encounter with the sage Vashistha became a major turning point in his life.

He eventually gave up his royal life and undertook intense spiritual practices.

By the time he appears in the Ramayana, Vishwamitra is a highly respected and powerful figure.

🏰 Vishwamitra Arrives at Ayodhya

One day, Vishwamitra arrives at the court of King Dasharatha.

Dasharatha welcomes the sage with great respect.

The king is pleased that such a distinguished sage has come to Ayodhya.

But Vishwamitra has not come simply to visit.

He has an important problem.

He is performing sacred rituals in the forest.

However, powerful beings are repeatedly disturbing those rituals.

The sage wants someone capable of protecting the sacred ceremony.

Then he makes his request.

🏹 Vishwamitra Asks for Rama

Vishwamitra asks Dasharatha to send Rama with him.

Dasharatha is deeply troubled.

Rama is his beloved son.

The king worries that Rama is too young to face dangerous enemies.

Dasharatha even offers to accompany Vishwamitra himself instead.

But Vishwamitra insists that Rama is the one who should come.

Eventually, Sage Vashistha helps Dasharatha understand that Vishwamitra’s request should be respected.

Dasharatha finally agrees.

And Rama accepts the responsibility.

👬 Lakshmana Chooses to Follow Rama

Rama does not leave alone.

His younger brother Lakshmana decides to accompany him.

Lakshmana does not want Rama to face the journey alone.

So the three — Rama, Lakshmana and Vishwamitra — leave Ayodhya together.

Rama does not yet know how important this event will become.

But destiny is bringing him closer to Sita.
