They then encountered Kabandha, who directed them toward Sugriva.
Their journey eventually brought them closer to Kishkindha.
And now, one of the most important meetings in the entire Ramayana is about to happen:

Rama is impressed by Hanuman’s intelligence and manner of speaking.

One of the important details of this meeting is Hanuman’s ability to communicate.
He does not approach Rama aggressively.
Instead, he speaks with respect, clarity and wisdom.

Hanuman explains that he serves Sugriva.
Sugriva is living near Rishyamuka Mountain because he fears his elder brother Vali.
Hanuman believes Rama and Sugriva can help each other.
He therefore takes Rama and Lakshmana to meet Sugriva.
This is the beginning of an alliance that will become extremely important.

It brings the human world and the Vanara world together for the first time on a major scale.
👑 Who Was Vali?
To understand Sugriva’s problem, we need to know about Vali.
Vali was Sugriva’s elder brother.
He was a powerful warrior and the ruler of Kishkindha.
The relationship between the two brothers eventually broke down because of a serious misunderstanding involving a demon named Mayavi.
⚔️ The Conflict Between Vali and Sugriva
According to the traditional story, Mayavi challenged Vali.
Vali pursued him into a cave.
Sugriva waited outside.
A long time passed.
Sugriva heard frightening sounds from inside and eventually saw blood coming out of the cave.
Believing that Vali had died, Sugriva blocked the entrance and returned to Kishkindha.
He eventually became ruler.
But Vali was not dead.
He returned and believed that Sugriva had betrayed him.
The Conflict Between Vali and Sugriva
💔 Sugriva Is Forced Away
Vali became angry with Sugriva.
The brothers became enemies.
Sugriva was driven away from Kishkindha.
He eventually found safety near Rishyamuka Mountain.
According to the traditional story, Vali could not approach that region because of a curse connected with Sage Matanga.
This gave Sugriva a place where he could live without constantly fearing Vali.
🤝 Sugriva Asks Rama for Help
Sugriva tells Rama about his situation.
He asks Rama to help him regain his position.
In return, Sugriva promises to use his Vanara followers to search for Sita.
Rama agrees.
But Sugriva is still uncertain about Rama’s strength.
He wants proof that Rama is powerful enough to defeat Vali.

Sugriva shows Rama several signs of Vali’s extraordinary strength.
Rama then demonstrates his own power.
Traditional versions describe Rama performing remarkable feats with his bow and arrows.

The two brothers fight fiercely.

But during the first encounter, Rama cannot clearly distinguish between Sugriva and Vali.
They look very similar.
Rama therefore does not shoot.
Sugriva is badly beaten and retreats.
He becomes disappointed.

To avoid confusion in the next encounter, Rama identifies Sugriva with a distinctive garland.
Sugriva then challenges Vali again.
Vali accepts the challenge.
The brothers begin fighting once more.
This time Rama can identify Sugriva.

During the battle, Rama shoots Vali with an arrow.
Vali falls.
The traditional account then presents an important philosophical conversation between Vali and Rama.
Vali questions Rama’s actions.
Rama explains his understanding of kingship, justice and the duty to punish wrongdoing.
The episode remains one of the most discussed moral questions in the Ramayana.

After being struck, Vali speaks with Rama.
The conversation focuses on duty, justice and the circumstances of the battle.
Rama explains his position.
Vali eventually accepts the outcome.
Before his death, Vali entrusts his son Angada to Sugriva.
He also advises Sugriva to rule wisely.
This brings the conflict between the brothers to an end.

After Vali’s death, Sugriva returns to Kishkindha.
He becomes king.
Angada, Vali’s son, is given an important position.
The Vanara kingdom is now under Sugriva’s leadership.
But Rama has not forgotten his own purpose.

After these events, the rainy season begins.
Travel through the forest becomes difficult.
Rama waits while Sugriva settles the affairs of the kingdom.
The traditional story describes Rama spending this period waiting for the search for Sita to begin.

Every day reminds him that Sita is still far away.

When the rainy season ends, Rama expects Sugriva to begin the search for Sita.

Hanuman joins the southern search party.
This group includes several important Vanara warriors.
Their journey takes them across difficult terrain.
Eventually, they reach a place where they face a serious problem.
They still have no clear information about Sita.
Time is running out.
Then they meet an extraordinary character:

Sampati is connected to Jatayu.
And he knows something about Sita.

Sampati is traditionally described as the elder brother of Jatayu.
When the Vanaras meet him, he learns that Jatayu died while trying to protect Sita.

He then reveals information that changes the entire search.
He knows where Sita has been taken.

Sampati tells the Vanaras that Sita has been taken across the ocean to Lanka.
The problem is enormous.
The Vanaras are standing on the mainland.
Lanka lies across a vast stretch of ocean.
They need someone capable of making the journey.
Everyone looks toward Hanuman.

Hanuman initially does not fully remember the extent of his own abilities.
But the Vanaras remind him of his extraordinary powers.
Hanuman begins to understand what he is capable of.
He realises that he may be the only one capable of crossing the ocean and reaching Lanka.
The mission is now clear.
Find Sita.
Cross the ocean.
Enter Lanka.
Give Rama’s message to Sita.
But how will Hanuman cross such a vast ocean?
